The Lesotho Male Circumcision program was launched in November 2012, as part of HIV preventive strategy. This was based on WHO recommendations, following encouraging results from three randomized controlled trials - that consistently demonstrated that circumcised men experienced significantly lower risk of HIV acquisition heterosexually.
