Overview

SMART Advocacy breaks down the goal of an organization into actionable steps and shows how to convince the people with power that taking necessary actions will achieve the organizational goals. The process delivers an evidence-driven strategy that leaders can take
forward confidently. The consultant seeks to turn broad, aspirational goals into concrete, timebound policy, or funding decisions
The aim is to equip advocates to achieve real, achievable, and sustainable change by providing them with the tools and strategies to effectively navigate the advocacy process.
SMART advocacy helps advocates to: Nurture Relationships with Stakeholders, Increase Public Awareness, Secure Funding for the Organization, Boost Participation in Events and Campaigns, Strengthen Internal Communication, Enhance Media Coverage, Develop Digital Advocacy Skills, Coordinate and Leverage Partnerships, Strengthen Network of Advocates, Educate and Inform Constituents, Create Narratives for Systemic Change, and Foster Culture of Civic Engagement

Responsibilities

  • Develop advocacy skills: Participants learn to identify advocacy issues, conduct stake holder analyses, and develop effective advocacy messages.
  • Strengthen capacity for engagement: The training focuses on enhancing the capacity of advocates to engage with stakeholders and coordinate efforts.
  •  Monitor and evaluate advocacy: Participants learn to determine advocacy results and conduct evaluations to measure the impact of their advocacy efforts.
  •  Fosters sustainability of advocacy efforts including management of advocacy groupsas well as documentation and report writing
    Deliverables
  •  The consultant will provide a structured, evidence-based approach to policy, funding, or social change. Based on proven frameworks like the Advance Family Planning (AFP) SMART model, the training focuses on creating "quick wins" and long-term impact by breaking down advocacy into actionable steps.
  •  Develop workshop agendas and materials using SMART advocacy guides.
  •  Lead trainings on identifying policy challenges, stakeholder analysis, and message development.
  •  Coach and mentor advocacy teams to refine strategies and finalize policy briefs.

Required Qualifications

  • relevant, and time-bound (SMART) advocacy strategies.
  • Education: A Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Public Health, Public Policy, Sociology, Development Studies, or a related field.
  •  Experience: At least 8–10 years of experience designing and leading advocacy initiatives and campaigns.
  •  Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated expertise in policy analysis, advocacy strategy development, and politically complex issues.
  •  Training Proficiency: 5–7 years of experience in facilitating SMART Advocacy workshops and developing training materials.
  •  Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with the nine-step SMART advocacy approach, including crafting evidence-based objectives.
