Overview

The Communication and Knowledge Management (CKM) Specialist works with the M&E, technical, programmatic and administrative staff, and Jhpiego’s headquarters publication and knowledge services units to ensure that information and knowledge developed by the Ethiopia Country Office is shared and disseminated widely and in a timely fashion to appropriate audiences and through appropriate media channels. The CKM Specialist will coordinate all communication-related activities, which includes media for high-level events that Jhpiego organizes with the Ethiopian Government, its donors or its other partners. The CKM Specialist will use Jhpiego’s Communication Guide to ensure high-quality external communication for the Country Office. In consultation with program teams, the Senior Program Officer, the project Director and the Country Director, s/he will develop and execute a plan that complements and highlights the success of programs as well as raises the profile and visibility of Jhpiego’s projects in Ethiopia. The CKM Specialist will initiate and coordinate activities and processes to ensure that knowledge capture and exchange (including program learning) occur among the Ethiopia office staff members, the larger Jhpiego organization, project partners and stakeholders, and the global health community.

Responsibilities

Communication Planning

  • Develop and update the office communication plan quarterly, present it for Jhpiego Management Team review, and execute approved activities.

Content Development

  • Regularly contribute articles, photos, and updates for Jhpiego and donor e-newsletters, websites, and other media outlets.
  • Prepare program briefs, fact sheets, and other communication materials with technical teams, and update them annually.
  • Prepare press briefings for donors, the MoH, and other government agencies as needed.

Event Coordination and Support

  • Support Jhpiego’s participation in international and local health events and conferences, including registration, display materials, giveaways, booth management, and poster development with M&E, SPO, and program teams.
  • Provide event support to regional offices as needed.
  • Collaborate on high-level events (launches, dissemination workshops, review meetings, dignitaries’ visits) by developing messages, press releases, brochures, and engaging media.

Publications and Design

  • Work with Jhpiego headquarters’ Publications Team to create graphic designs for communication materials.
  • Oversee translation of communication materials into local languages as required.

Branding, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Liaise with donors’ communication officers to ensure all products comply with media relations, branding, and marking guidelines.
  • Properly document all communication materials and share with donors and Jhpiego headquarters.

Marking and Branding

  • Work with program teams and Operations to ensure that Jhpiego adheres to the various donors’ marking requirements on its training, events, program deliverables, publications, media productions, donations, administrative stationary, and project offices.
  • Periodically check that the marking plan approved for specific projects is being implemented appropriately.
  • Participate in the business development process by contributing to the writing of communication and knowledge management strategies for proposals.

Knowledge Management and Learning Responsibilities:

Knowledge Capture and Organization

  • Collaborate with Jhpiego Knowledge Services to establish knowledge capture and exchange processes across offices.
  • Organize, catalog, and archive project knowledge assets (training materials, tools, reports, presentations) in Jhpiego’s central library.

Knowledge Product Development

  • Design and produce project tools, infographics, briefs, and other materials to translate MEL data and findings into actionable, user-friendly formats.
  • Collaborate with MEL and technical teams to develop success stories, case studies, technical notes, and evidence summaries.

Documentation and Lessons Learned

  • Document lessons learned and actionable recommendations from project implementation, supervision, and learning events.
  • Standardize success story documentation in line with donor and Jhpiego guidelines and orient staff on documentation practices.

Knowledge Sharing and Accessibility

  • Update JLibrary and maintain the Ethiopia Intranet to ensure timely access for staff and partners.
  • Orient new staff on Jhpiego knowledge services, including repositories, Community of practices (CoPs), and other resources.

Learning Facilitation

  • Support planning and facilitation of learning events, reflection sessions, technical exchanges, and dissemination workshops.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning through brown-bag sessions, Communities of Practice, and other staff and partner engagement platforms.

Knowledge Management and Compliance

  • Ensure timely uploading and archiving of knowledge products in Jhpiego repositories.
  • Comply with donor knowledge-sharing requirements and distribute key findings to donors, ministries, and stakeholders.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in communication, public health, social science, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience for Master’s or minimum of 7 years’ experience for bachelor’s degree in communication, knowledge management in international development or public health programs, preferably with USG- or donor-funded projects.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, communication, presentation and editorial skills, including desktop publishing
  • Experience with digital knowledge management platforms (e.g., JLibrary, SharePoint, intranets) and online collaboration tools.
  • Experience working in the political, social and health system of Ethiopia.

Required Skills & Abilities                                                                                                                 

  • Proficient in speaking and writing Amharic and English
  • Proficient computer skills in word processing, especially Microsoft Publisher presentation programs, Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Photoshop; ability to learn new software packages
  • Good presentation skills
  • Ability to take the initiative and work independently
  • Demonstrated competence to assess priorities and manage a variety of activities in a time-sensitive environment and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a complex and rapidly changing environment, excellent interpersonal skills.

Salary: Between 22,966 – 33,563 USD per annum.
