Overview

Jhpiego is an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University. Jhpiego develops innovations to enhance the capacity of health care workers, strengthening health systems and improve delivery of care towards improving the health and well-being. Jhpiego has been collaborating with the Government of Malawi and various partners in implementing a wide-range of interventions in maternal, newborn and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention and care and treatment, since 1999. 

 

hpiego is seeking a highly qualified Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Technical Manager to support MNH interventions across the Malawi MNCH-N program, ensuring integrated and high-quality service delivery. This role involves providing technical guidance to facilitate seamless and coordinated implementation of MNCH-N activities. The ideal candidate will be a midwife with current clinical experience or an obstetrician-gynecologist (ObGyn).

 

The Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Technical Manager will be based in one of the project implementation districts in Malawi and will report directly to the Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Technical Advisor.

 

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership, capacity development, and mentorship to district health teams and healthcare providers.
  • Support the development and implementation of MNH service delivery packages, including ANC, EmONC, essential newborn care, postnatal care, and MPDSR.
  • Conduct in-service training and clinical mentorship to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Oversee the implementation of MNH activities across districts to ensure they are implemented effectively.
  • Ensure program implementation adheres to national guidelines and quality standards.
  • Support implementation of innovative approaches to implement targeted MNCH services and improve quality of care across the continuum.
  • Facilitate on-the-job training, simulation exercises, and quality improvement initiatives for healthcare providers on MNCH protocols.
  • Provide on-the-job clinical training and onsite mentorship to frontline health workers in the management of obstetric complications, working in close coordination with MOH trainers.
  • Support the implementation of systematic QI initiatives in sites, mentoring and coaching.
  • Support on specific project activities and procurement support for MNH commodities across project sites as required 
  • Work with regional and district teams to set MNH priorities.
  • Ensure effective use of MNCH data for program monitoring, review, and adaptive management.
  • Work closely with Monitoring & Evaluation teams to ensure quality data collection and use for decision-making and prioritization of interventions.
  • Support in documentation of successes, lessons learned, and challenges; contribute to timely quarterly and annual reporting at both country and global levels.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Nursing and Midwifery /ObGyn
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in designing, implementing, and coordinating MNCH programs, preferably in Malawi or similar low-resource settings. 
  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical assistance and on-the-job training to healthcare providers on MNCH-related topics. 
  • Proven experience in supervising or managing technical staff, particularly in a decentralized program structure. 
  • Experience working with government health structures, health facilities, and local partners. 

Technical Skills

  • Deep technical knowledge of evidence-based MNCH interventions across the continuum of care (including antenatal care, skilled delivery, postnatal care, emergency obstetric and newborn care, child health, and integrated child illness management). 
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering training and quality improvement programs for health care workers. 
  • Strong understanding of data utilization for program monitoring, quality improvement, and informed decision-making in MNCH. 
  • Knowledge of strengthening referral systems within health facilities and between facilities and communities.

  • Commitment to promoting respectful maternity care and family-centered approaches in healthcare delivery. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel  across all operational districts within the three regions of MalawiFluency in written and spoken English is required. Professional proficiency in Chichewa is highly desirable.
