Nigeria continues to face a critical nutrition crisis, with 40% of children under five stunted, 8% wasted, and 27% underweight, according to the latest Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS 2024). Micronutrient deficiencies remain widespread, with over 50% of women of reproductive age affected by anaemia with vitamin A and iron deficiency still prevalent. These alarming indicators are compounded by persistently high maternal and child mortality rates, 512 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (NDHS 2018), 110 under-five deaths per 1,000 live births, and 41 neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births-largely driven by poor quality of care and preventable conditions such as sepsis, intrapartum injuries, and pneumonia (NDHS 2024). Immunization coverage remains suboptimal, with many children missing routine vaccinations due to weak health system, poor access and low community awareness, further increasing vulnerability to vaccine-preventable diseases. In response, United State’s Momentum Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) project, in collaboration with the Jhpiego is committed to building the capacity of health workers and community volunteers across five states (Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Ebonyi and Ondo) to deliver integrated nutrition, including the management of acute malnutrition (IMAM) and maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) and immunization services.
