Overview

The aim of the programme is to identify, develop, and deploy high potential responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) automation and optimisation solutions targeting towards tackling issues in priority areas of health, education, humanitarian, economic development, and climate action.

 

The Data Scientist leads the application of AI and machine learning to critical public health and development challenges in Ethiopia. This role combines technical leadership, cross-sector collaboration, and capacity building to ensure responsible and impactful use of data science.

Responsibilities

Ensure Technical Integrity of Pilots

  • Collaborate with ministries and local partners to prepare, clean, and document datasets undersigned Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs).
  • Validate partner algorithms and conduct performance testing in Ethiopian contexts (e.g., sensitivity, specificity, subgroup accuracy).
  • Support bias and equity audits required by the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) prior to scale-up decisions. 

Bridge Global Models with Ethiopian Realities

  • Guide adaptation of global models (e.g., maternal risk stratification, malaria RDT interpretation) to Ethiopian datasets, languages, and workflows.
  • Document model transferability across contexts to inform policy and create learning products.

Embed Responsible AI Practices

  • Work with Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) teams to operationalize fairness metrics and equity indicators.
  • Develop tools for algorithmic auditing and monitoring dashboards accessible to ministries. 

Build Local Capacity and Ensure Handover

  • Mentor data science teams and junior developers.
  • Train ministry focal points and university faculty in practical AI/ML workflows to ensure sustainable institutional capacity.

Required Qualifications

  • Tech./M.E./M.S./M.Sc. or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, or a relevant quantitative field with 9+ years of experience, or a PhD from a reputed institute.
  • Proven experience applying AI/ML to real-world problems, especially in low-resource or public sector contexts.
  • Strong research background with familiarity in foundational models, LLMs, and state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Skilled in data mining, analysis, model development, simulation, and visualization.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor developers and lead projects to completion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; publication record is a plus.
  • Passionate about solving large, societally important problems through technology.

Preferred Qualifications

Salary: Between 28,659 – 53,164 USD per annum.
