Overview

Jhpiego is an international non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University. Jhpiego is seeking a Nutrition Regional Technical Advisor to provide technical expertise and leadership in the design, implementation and oversight of nutrition activities as part of comprehensive maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition (MNCH-N) programs. 

 

The Nutrition Senior Technical Advisor will provide technical expertise in nutrition to ensure delivery of high-quality technical approaches that reflect best practices in strengthening integrated maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN) services as part of pregnancy, birth, newborn and child health services and screening and management of children with severe and moderate acute malnutrition (SAM/MAM) at community, primary and referral levels. They will ensure technical approaches are aligned with and responsive to organizational, client and donor needs and requirements.  

 

The Nutrition Senior Technical Advisor will represent Jhpiego externally and establish strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advance organizational objectives.  They will foster new relationships internally and support the development of new external partnerships to achieve objectives. The Senior Technical Advisor will build capacity, support knowledge sharing, and business development and will support the development and implementation of selected work-plan activities and contribute to program learning.  

 

This regional position will be based in a country in Africa with established Jhpiego presence and nutrition programming (e.g., Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, Ethiopia). 

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership in Nutrition

  • Support development and implementation of country-led strategies and tools for strengthening: 1)  integrated MIYCN services across the pregnancy, birth, infant and child health care continuum (including, but not limited, to counseling and support for breastfeeding and Infant Young Child Feeding (IYCF) best practices, micronutrient supplementation, and prevention and screening for acute and chronic malnutrition); 2) screening and management of children with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM) across system levels
  • Support development and/or revision and use of evidence-based training/mentoring approaches and materials to strengthen competencies of nutrition and MNCH health care professionals for provision of MIYCN and SAM/MAM services.
  • Coordinate with U.S. Government (USG) and other non-USG partners to develop and align strategies and materials for delivery of quality MIYCN and SAM/MAM services (regional and country levels)
  • Regularly synthesize and share global and regional MIYCN resources
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations of nutrition activities and results.
  • Work with MCGL MEL, technical and program managers to monitor prioritized data/results related to MIYCN, SAM/MAM and child health activities and adjust program activities as needed
  • Organize and facilitate regular virtual cross-country learning focused on critical technical issues for effective implementation of MIYCN and SAM/MAM best practices
  • Collaborate with Monitoring & Evaluation and Quality Improvement colleagues at global, regional and country levels to improve and monitor quality of MIYCN and SAM/SAM across system levels, using routine health information data as feasible (at regional and country levels)
  • Support country teams to identify and address bottlenecks in the availability of essential child health and nutrition commodities

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent Jhpiego in strategic engagement with U.S. Government (USG) and other non-USG partners to develop and align strategies and technical resources for delivery of quality nutrition services (regional and country levels)
  • Foster strong relationships with USG and non-USG partners working in child health (regional and country levels)

Knowledge Sharing, Learning and Reporting

  • Regularly synthesize and share key evidence, publications, and global and regional nutrition resources
  • Oversee preparation of technical reports, case studies, learning briefs and presentations of project nutrition activities and results
  • Lead and contribute to cross-country learning initiatives to capture and disseminate best practices and innovations in nutrition programming.

Required Qualifications

  • Nutrition professional or healthcare provider (e.g., nurse, physician) with at least 7 years of experience supporting MIYCN services as part of integrated MNCH and nutrition services
  • At least 7 years of experience supporting MIYCN programs (preferably at primary and hospital level).
  • At least 5 years of experience supporting screening and management of children with moderate and severe acute malnutrition (MAM/SAM) (preferably at community, primary and referral levels)
  • Up to date knowledge of and familiarity with global MIYCN and MAM/SAM evidence, guidelines and resources
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and providing feedback on project workplans and reports
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments and conditions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and supervision skills, including the demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and coach technical staff  in nutrition principles.
  • Ability to work independently and with team members and partners at all levels 
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to think and plan strategically 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Ability to travel up to 40% to support country programs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency or fluency in a second language (preferably French or Portuguese)

 

Total compensation will be based on the country of hire and Jhpiego’s local compensation plan.
