Overview

The Sr. Principal Technical Advisor will  provide technical leadership and ensure technical quality across Jhpiego’s portfolio of Nutrition projects.  They will design and define new approaches and establish metrics to achieve program goals and public health impact. 

The Sr. Principal Technical Advisor for Nutrition will provide leadership, expertise, and high level technical and program support for implementation of Nutrition projects and workplans. This will include support for policy adoption, updating guidelines, building health worker capacity, continuous quality improvement, facilitating data use for decision making and documentation of best practices and lessons learned in nutrition.

The Sr. Principal Technical Advisor  for Nutrition will advance Jhpiego’s nutrition leadership globally by representing Jhpiego in global and regional fora and leading the development of opportunities and relationships that grow critical aspects of Jhpiego’s Nutrition portfolio to support organizational objectives.

This position may be based in the United States (Baltimore, MD or Washington, DC) or regionally in a country where Jhpiego has an office.

Responsibilities

Technical Assistance & Quality Programming

  • Conceptualizes, designs and develops nutrition workplans for seamless integration and implementation of activities/initiatives in alignment with the vision, strategic plan and organizational priorities of Jhpiego    
  • Provides senior level, high quality technical assistance by combining industry knowledge and best practices with strategic program expertise, guidance and advice for country programs
  • Ensures that the programs that are assisted are technically sound, cohesive, evidence-based, and responsive to the priorities and needs of the countries and donors
  • Identifies and actively seeks opportunities to integrate priorities across the organization and works with Jhpiego country colleagues to operationalize strategic objectives and activities in different country settings
  • Leads the design of implementation research that promotes the future adoption of new and transformative initiatives / innovations
  • Acts as the lead on the development of guidance and learning resources as well as the lead for defining and testing new tools and innovations for accelerating achievement of results.
  • Leads the development of innovations and new products and high impact approaches in technical area 
  • Assesses and analyzes issues that impede progress and develops and tests appropriate strategies for long-term, sustainable resolution
  • Establishes methods, metrics and quality standards to measure the success of designated initiatives in supported countries/programs

Global Technical Strategy Development & Implementation

  • Conceptualizes global technical strategies and approaches that will transform the delivery and implementation of interventions across the organization. 
  • Leads implementation of initiatives or activities aimed at advancing or institutionalizing global strategy and approaches across the organization
  • Identifies strategic opportunities to apply, integrate or test new approaches to strengthen future positioning.

Capacity Building

  • Designs sustainable capacity building approaches that address organizational needs and priorities and positions the organization for future growth.
  • Leads capacity building activities for technical staff and partners.
  • Coaches and mentors Technical Advisors to hone advanced “soft skills” required for building relationships and delivering technical assistance in complex operating environments. 

New Program Development & Donor Relations

  • Generates leads through relationships and expert knowledge of donor priorities and opportunities.
  • Leads business development activities including identifying and supporting new opportunities.
  • Serves as design lead on “must win” or technically complex opportunities and leads the development and design of the technical approach. 
  • Facilitates alignment among partners and stakeholders on technical approach in new business development.  
  • Provides advice and insights on whether the organization should pursue new business opportunities

KM & Learning

  • Provides support to the realization of external communication priorities including supporting the development of success stories, blogs, and other program and technical related communication materials that demonstrate Jhpiego’s technical expertise, results, and programming excellence
  • Supports field staff to present and disseminate learning from country implementation
  • Contributes to the development of peer-reviewed publications

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in public health, nutrition, or related degree
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible technical experience including implementing and/or managing international field-based nutrition programs
  • Strong technical and programmatic background in nutrition, especially management, technical support and programmatic direction.
  • Experience in working in challenging environments in Africa, Asia or LAC regions
  • Proven leadership skills and expertise in strategic program planning, implementation and management
  • Proven technical experience in the design, implementation, or measurement of nutrition interventions
  • Proven experience in leading highly skilled and qualified technical personnel
  • Proven collaborator with ability to see and create connections across vertical health areas, as well as across functional areas
  • Excellent understanding of the donor landscape for funding opportunities
  • Excellent understanding of US Government, multilateral donors and other donor structure and processes
  • Proven ability and experience developing productive working relationships with counterparts in other agencies and organizations worldwide
  • Results oriented with strong change management and decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to work in a complex, fast-paced, multi-cultural environment with multiple tasks and short deadlines
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills, including strong technical writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally up to 20% of time
  • Fluency in French, Spanish, or Portuguese languages preferred
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the time

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

The salary range for this role is expected to be: $127,874 - $162,786

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
