Overview

Jhpiego is an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University. Jhpiego develops innovations to enhance the capacity of health care workers, strengthening health systems and improve delivery of care towards improving the health and well-being. Jhpiego has been collaborating with the Government of Malawi and various partners in implementing a wide-range of interventions in maternal, newborn and child health, family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention and care and treatment, since 1999. 

 

Jhpiego is preparing to implement an anticipated Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health and Nutrition (MNCH-N) program in Malawi, aimed at improving health outcomes for women, newborns, and children through evidence-based interventions and strengthened health systems. The MNCH Technical  Advisor will play a critical role in providing strategic and technical leadership during the project start-up phase to support the successful design, implementation, and monitoring of high-impact MNCH activities. Working closely with Jhpiego’s national and global teams, government counterparts, and key stakeholders, the Advisor will lead the development of a comprehensive project workplan, budget, and performance monitoring plan (PMP); facilitate stakeholder engagement to ensure alignment with Ministry of Health (MOH) and donor priorities; develop technical standard operating procedures (SOPs) and staffing plans to support high-quality, integrated MNCH-N service delivery; and ensure implementation readiness through the orientation and onboarding of technical staff.

 

This is a Lilongwe , Malawi based position reporting to the Acting Country Director.

 

 

Responsibilities

Strategic and Technical Leadership

  • Lead technical inputs into project design and start-up strategy, focusing on:Maternal and newborn health
  • Facility-based antenatal care (ANC) improvements.
  • Labor and delivery readiness, including infection prevention and control.
  • Newborn care interventions such as resuscitation and Kangaroo Mother Care.
  • Postnatal checkups and community-based maternal and newborn health programs.
  • Integrated family health outreach clinics (IFHOCs) for hard-to-reach areas.

Child Health and Nutrition, including:

  • Integrated management of childhood illnesses (IMCI) and emergency triage (ETAT).
  • Community-based case management (iCCM) for childhood illnesses.
  • Routine immunization and support for the introduction of new antigens.
  • Nutrition services including growth monitoring, micronutrient supplementation, and management of acute malnutrition.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Conduct consultations with MOH, local partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Document stakeholder feedback and integrate it into project planning.
  • Liaise with operations and subject matter experts within Jhpiego for applicable support necessary to complete deliverables.
  • Participate in project startup/planning meetings.

Systems and Tools Development

  • Develop SOPs for facility-based and community-based MNCH services.
  • Define success metrics and indicators for MNCH interventions.
  • Provide inputs into staffing plans and job descriptions for technical positions.

Capacity Building and Onboarding

  • Support recruitment and participate in interviews for technical staff.
  • Develop and deliver orientation and training materials for new hires.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Contribute to the development of the PMP and reporting templates.
  • Ensure alignment with donor and Jhpiego reporting requirements.

 

 

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in a medical field (e.g., MBChB, Nursing, Midwifery).
  • A Master’s degree or higher in one of the following fields: Public Health, Medicine (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent), Health Systems Management, International Development, Nursing or Midwifery.
  • Additional relevant training in MNCH is desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience including:
  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing MNCH programs.
  • Familiarity with EIMC and nutrition programming.
  • Experience with integrated service delivery and health systems strengthening.
  • Proven track record leading start-up phases of donor-funded health projects, including developing workplans, budgets, and PMPs.
  • Past work experience involving engagement with Malawi’s Ministry of Health, donors (e.g., U.S. Government [USG], PEPFAR), and community stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing SOPs and operational tools for facility and community-based health services.
  • Experience creating staffing plans and job descriptions for technical health positions, recruiting, training, and onboarding technical staff.
  • Ability to contribute to M&E frameworks and donor reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated experience engaging senior officials from various stakeholder groups such as government, NGOs, FBOs, CBOs, the for-profit business community, and donors.
  • In-depth understanding of Malawi’s healthcare system, policies, community and government structures, plus experience living and working in Malawi is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Strong skills in word processing, Excel spreadsheets, and PowerPoint.
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa is required.Malawi nationals are encouraged to apply
