Overview

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL), funded by the U.S. Government, is a global mechanism that saves lives and improves delivery of quality, integrated maternal, newborn child health and nutrition (MNCH+N) services by distributing life-saving commodities, medicines, and vaccines, and strengthening critical health care services for pregnant women, newborns and children under five. The project strengthens safe childbirth services for mothers and babies, vaccinates children, treats deadly conditions and malnutrition, and controls disease outbreaks.  

 

Jhpiego seeks a qualified candidate for the Nutrition Technical Advisor position for its MCGL project. Under the supervision of the Technical Director, this position will provide technical oversight of all project-supported nutrition activities and results. S/he will be the lead MCGL Nutrition technical specialist and should have deep MIYCN expertise and experience working with MOHF and other stakeholders to implement integrated MNCH and nutrition programs in the Bangladesh context.

 

S/he will work closely with members of the MCGL team, Bangladesh Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MOHFW) and partner counterparts in project-supported districts to strengthen Maternal Infant Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) services for pregnant and lactating women, newborns and children under five as part of antenatal care, intrapartum, postnatal, child growth and monitoring, immunization and sick child services.  In collaboration with the Child Health Technical Advisor, s/he will provide technical oversight of project-supported services for children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) at primary and hospital level.

Responsibilities

Technical 

  • Work with the MCGL team, MOHFW and partners to strengthen provision of integrated MNCH + Nutrition activities as part of antenatal, birth, postnatal, infant, child health and immunization services
  • Support MoHFW and local partners to develop and/or update or adapt evidence-based MIYCN training/mentoring materials, standards, job aids, to support delivery of high-quality nutrition services (including, but not limited, to counseling for breastfeeding and Infant Young Child Feeding (IYCF) best practices, micronutrient supplementation, screening for acute and chronic malnutrition and management of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and moderate acute malnutrition (MAM)
  • Oversee mentoring and capacity building for nutrition professionals, health workers [doctors, nurses, midwives], professional associations, and local partner staff, for provision of evidence based MIYCN interventions, including SAM/MAM screening and management interventions
  • Provide and facilitate mentoring and capacity building at the facility level for provision of quality nutrition services across the antenatal, birth, postnatal, infant and child health care continuum
  • Provide technical oversight of project-supported services for children with SAM and MAM at primary and hospital level
  • Oversee procurement of applicable essential nutrition commodities in line with MOHFW guidelines and standards
  • Work closely with MCGL technical and Quality Improvement advisors, MOHFW and key stakeholders to improve and monitor quality of integrated MNCH and nutrition services using local service delivery data
  • Coordinate closely with other relevant U.S. Government (USG) and non-USG projects to identify synergies for improving quality of integrated MNCH+N services.
  • Participate in and promote spaces for multisectoral collaboration to address maternal and child malnutrition.

 

Programmatic

  • Work closely with the MCGL COP and Technical Director on setting and achieving nutrition priorities and directions and respond to requests for support from counterparts and local partners
  • Provide leadership for the development, implementation and monitoring of nutrition activities in the project integrated work plan, in collaboration with the project Chief of Party, Technical Director, project staff, MOHFW and other stakeholders to align with government priorities and ensure timely implementation 
  • Work with the M&E team to design and implement the M&E plan to regularly track data/results related to nutrition activities to adjust program activities as needed
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and implementing partners to ensure that project activities are responsive to and align with MOHFW and USG priorities.  
  • Prepare technical reports of project nutrition activities and results.
  • Document successes, lessons learned and implementation challenges and contribute to timely quarterly and annual reporting of project nutrition activities and results
  • Oversee local partners’ nutrition activities and mentor and monitor local partners’ technical staff and their work plan activities 
  • Maintain effective and respectful communication with all team members, fostering a cordial and collaborative environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in Nutrition; specialization in Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) strongly preferred
  • At least 6 years of experience supporting integrated MNCH and Nutrition programs in the Bangladesh context
  • At least 2 years of experience supporting SAM and MAM programs in the Bangladesh context
  • Proven experience overseeing and implementing large-scale, donor-funded nutrition programs for women, newborns and children

Preferred Qualifications

Skills and Competencies

  • Up to date with global recommended MIYCN best practices and resources
  • Excellent knowledge of maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition services in the Bangladesh context, preferably in the public and private sector
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work environments and conditions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong inter-personal and supervisory skills, including demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and coach technical staff  
  • Ability to work independently and with team members and partners at all levels 
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills and the ability to think and plan strategically 
  • Fluency in written and spoken English strongly preferred  
  • Availability to travel within the country 40% of the time
