Overview

The Reaching Impact Saturation and Epidemic Control (RISE) program is saving lives and improving health by controlling the HIV pandemic and strengthening global health security to limit the spread of deadly disease outbreaks. RISE uses evidence-based practices from over 20 years of PEPFAR implementation to address critical HIV priorities along with global health security (GHS), maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition (MNCH-N), tuberculosis (TB), malaria, data systems, supply chain and commodity management, and other cross-cutting areas.

 

In Burundi, Jhpiego is recruiting for an anticipated new project supporting Burundi’s lifesaving MNCH-N services. 

 

The Nutrition Advisor will provide technical expertise and leadership in the design, implementation, and oversight of nutrition interventions for the anticipated RISE-Burundi Maternal, Newborn, Child Health, and Nutrition (MNCH-N) project, ensuring integrated and high-quality service delivery. This role will also provide technical guidance to relevant project staff and partners involved in nutrition activities in the regions. The Nutrition Advisor will work in close tandem with the MNCH Coordinator and other relevant technical, programmatic, and operations staff to ensure seamless and integrated Maternal, Newborn, Child Health, and Nutrition (MNCH-N) activity implementation.  

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the implementation of high-impact nutrition interventions across all stages of the continuum of care, from preconception through early childhood, within the MNCH-N framework. 
  • Work in close collaboration with the MNCH Coordinator to ensure integrated planning, implementation, and monitoring of all MNCH-Nutrition activities. 
  • Ensure seamless collaboration and joint implementation with the RISE-Burundi HIV project, harmonizing project plans and identifying efficiencies, and representing the RISE project in a coordinated fashion with key stakeholders
  • Provide technical guidance and support for activities related to infant and young child feeding (IYCF-E), community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM including SAM/MAM), micronutrient supplementation, and nutrition counseling services. 
  • Ensure the integration of nutrition services within antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), and child health programs. 
  • Provide and facilitate on-the-job training, simulation, and mentorship for Health Care Providers (HCPs) and Health Extension Workers (HEWs) on nutrition protocols and quality improvement initiatives. 
  • Support the availability and utilization of essential nutrition commodities and supplies at health facilities and community levels. 
  • Collaborate with MEL and data teams to ensure effective use of nutrition data for program monitoring, review, and adaptation. 
  • Provide technical guidance to regional and woreda-level staff and partners involved in delivering nutrition services, ensuring adherence to national and project guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MPH, MSc, or equivalent) in Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science, or a related field. 
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in designing, implementing, and coordinating large-scale nutrition programs, preferably in Burundi or similar low-resource settings. 
  • Demonstrated experience in providing technical assistance and on-the-job training to healthcare providers and community health workers on nutrition-related topics. 
  • Experience in integrating nutrition services within broader MNCH or primary healthcare programs. 
  • Experience working with government health structures, health facilities, and local partners. 

Technical Skills

  • Deep technical knowledge of evidence-based nutrition interventions, including IYCF-E, CMAM (SAM/MAM), micronutrient supplementation, and nutrition assessments. 
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering training and mentorship programs for health care workers and community volunteers on nutrition. 
  • Strong understanding of data utilization for program monitoring, quality improvement, and informed decision-making in nutrition programs 
  • Knowledge of community-level nutrition approaches and referral systems for malnutrition cases.
