Overview

Jhpiego is conducting a mixed-methods evaluation of the Quality Improvement and Leadership Management (QILM) initiative in three Nigerian states: Jigawa, Gombe, and Ekiti. The evaluation will assess quality of care improvements in service delivery across HIV, TB, malaria, MNCH, and COVID-19 programs. The evaluation includes structured interviews, clinical observations, and stakeholder engagement using digital tools.

Jhpiego seeks experience evaluators who will served as researcher evaluator residing in the above states to support 2 days of training followed by a paid 10 days of fieldwork. Selected individuals will play a critical role in collecting accurate and ethical data from healthcare providers, patients, and managers.

Responsibilities

Training and Preparation

  • Attend 1 full day of training on study objectives, data tools (KoboCollect), ethical procedures, and field expectations.
  • Participate in tool walkthroughs, mock interviews, and consent simulations.

Data Collection Activities

  • Assignments will depend on the candidate’s background and tool needs. Each evaluator may be assigned one or more of the following:
  1. Clinical Observation (Tool 2B)
  • Conduct structured non-intrusive observations of provider–patient interactions in
  • outpatient and antenatal settings.
  • Must obtain verbal consent from both provider and patient before observation.
  • Document findings using KoboCollect based on clinical behavior standards.
  1. Interviews (Tools 1, 2A, 3)
  • Administer structured digital interviews with:
  • Facility managers on infrastructure and staffing (Tool 1)
  • Healthcare providers on QI knowledge and practices (Tool 2A)
  • Outpatients and pregnant women (Tool 3) on their care experiences
  • Manage informed consent and complete Kobo Collect forms accurately.
  1. FDG/KII (Tool 4)
  • Support facilitation or documentation of focus group discussions or key informant interviews with local stakeholders.
  • Record (with consent), take structured notes, and submit recordings to supervisors.

Ethics and Security Responsibility

  • Ensure all participants give proper verbal consent.
  • Screen, recruit and consent study participants in accordance with the study SOP or research protocol.
  • Notify the study team on any Severe Adverse Event, protocol deviation or any other ethical issues during the data collection process.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality, especially for patient- or provider-related data.
  • Handle mobile devices, recordings, and field notes securely and responsibly.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • May be assigned to supervise and coordinate a research team during fieldwork.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a trained clinical professional (CHEW, Nurse, Clinician, PHC provider, etc.).– Essential
  • Must have hands-on experience in primary health care service delivery.– Essential
  • Able to interpret clinical behaviors and patient interactions.– Essential
  • Prior experience leading or supporting similar research projects is an advantage.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods and stakeholder level engagement is desirable.
  • Experience in digital data collection (preferably KoboCollect)
  • Possess a range of computer skills (including Word Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access), which may need to be acquired through very quick learning.
  • Reside in Jigawa, Gombe, or Ekiti and be familiar with local health systems.
  • Fluency in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in English.
  • Fluency in any local language in the study locations (e.g. Hausa, Yoruba, Fulfulde) will be an advantage
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

 

Deliverables

  • Fully completed digital data entries (KoboCollect) for all assigned tools
  • Accurate field logs and daily summaries
  • Audio recordings (where applicable) and field notes submitted securely
  • Ability to travel 25% of time.
