Overview

Position Overview 

 

The Reaching Impact, Saturation, and Epidemic Control (RISE) project is a multi-year global project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) working with countries to achieve a shared vision of attaining and maintaining epidemic control, with stronger local partners capable of managing and achieving results through sustainable, self-reliant, and resilient health systems. RISE South Africa is hiring several positions to fulfill the project mandate.

 

 

The Office Driver will provide reliable and courteous transportation services to Jhpiego staff and visitors with safety as a top priority; to provide a communication link between customers and staff; to operate and maintain assigned vehicle(s); and maintain vehicle records. This is a responsible, non-supervisory position.  Duties include operating and maintaining vehicles with a focus on safety and customer courtesy; performing daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; performing minor maintenance tasks on the vehicles when necessary; fueling the vehicles; ensuring that periodic scheduled vehicle maintenance is completed and reported; documenting customer usage; preparing trip reports; preparing accident and incident reports as necessary; assisting passengers and handicapped customers in and out of the vehicle; providing safety briefing to customers; and providing other services as requested by Jhpiego office management when not engaged in transportation service.

 

The Driver Position is a Full Time Fixed-Term role ending on 31 December 2025 and may be renewable subject to funding availability and ongoing needs of the organisation. The position will operate from the Jhpiego South Africa Office in Pretoria.   

Responsibilities

 

Driving

 

  • Understand the basic operations and maintenance requirements of a vehicle;
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers;
  • Treat staff and passengers with respect and courteously regardless of gender, age, religion or nationality;
  • Coordinate closely with team to develop schedule, route and direction information;
  • Deliver and pick up material and documents at offices and designated locations following the instructions accurately;
  • Always keep supervisor informed if driving at night or if driving into areas considered potentially unsafe;
  • Never use vehicle for personal use;
  • Ensure timely conveyance of materials and documents to and from places as instructed by supervisor or manager and report any instance of mishap to supervisor/manager;

 

Repair and Maintenance

 

  • Always keep the vehicle neat and clean;
  • Refuel vehicles;
  • Carry out necessary inspections;
  • Complete daily safety and maintenance checks of vehicle. Perform minor maintenance, repair and cleaning work on vehicles; (e.g. replace bulbs, refill radiator water, change tires);
  • Ensure timely engine oil change and other lubricants i.e. brake fluid, engine oil, when required;
  • Report any case of accident, injury or damage of the vehicle to the supervisor/ manager;

 

Documentation:

 

  • Maintain accurate records including vehicle logs, fuel, oil change, maintenance record and others as required;
  • Follow the safety and security guidelines;
  • Notify supervisor of any safety or maintenance concerns;
  • Assist team with documentation at program sites as needed.

 

Safety & Security

 

  • Make sure safety belts are properly fastened;
  • Do not permit unauthorized adults or children to travel in Jhpiego vehicles;
  • Comply with all applicable safety requirements, laws and regulations.

 

Teamwork

 

  • Perform duties within the context of team objectives, including potentially contributing to program demand generation and community health awareness campaigns or support data collection especially during high-volume events;
  • Perform any other job assigned by the supervisor or management;
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, and other employees;

 

Required Qualifications

  • Valid driver’s license for heavy volume vehicles with accident-free record;
  • 1 or more years’ experience, international organization or corporation experience is advantageous;
  • A broad variety of driving and vehicle maintenance skills;
  • Be self-motivated, proactive and have a positive attitude to work requiring minimum supervision;
  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle a variety of assignments sometimes under pressure of deadlines;
  • Be cooperative, hardworking, flexible and dependable;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence;
  • Pleasant and warm personality;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Be of high integrity and have a sense of confidentiality;
  • Be willing to take on extra responsibilities to achieve the goals/objectives set by the organization;
