The Accelerating Measurable Progress Leveraging Investment for Postpartum Haemorrhage Impact (AMPLI PPHI) project is a multi-country project led by Jhpiego. AMPLI PPHI aims to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity by scaling up the adoption of underutilized, WHO-recommended products for the prevention and treatment of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). Initially launched in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea, India, and Kenya, the project has now expanded to Nigeria and Zambia. Over its two-and-a-half-year implementation, the project will focus on promoting Heat Stable Carbetocin (HSC) for PPH prevention during active management of the third stage of labor, calibrated drapes for accurate blood loss estimation, and Tranexamic Acid (TXA) along with other uterotonics and IV fluids (bundled care) for the treatment of PPH In addition, the project will reinforce community-level use of misoprostol for cases of bleeding after birth.
In Nigeria, the project will train nurses, midwives, and modified life-saving Skills (MLSS)-trained Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) across 25 health facilities (15 in Kebbi and 10 in Ondo). Training will follow a cascade model, starting with refresher course for the National Master Trainers (NMTs) in December 2024, who will train State Master Trainers (SMTs) in January 2025. SMTs will then conduct facility-level training using the Low-Dose High-Frequency (LDHF) approach for healthcare providers across select facilities in Ondo and Kebbi state. The 9-day cluster training sessions will be supported by stakeholders such as the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), State Primary Health Care Development Agencies (SPHCDA). A total of six health workers will be trained per cluster, guided by one trainer per cluster.
The goal of this activity is to build the capacity, competencies and develop the skills of service providers on the prevention, treatment and management of PPH using these underutilized drugs and commodities.
