USAID Afya Yangu–Mama na Mtoto is a five-year project (2022–2027) aimed at increasing the demand for and use of quality integrated RMNCAH services, particularly by women and youth in Tanzania. The project is implemented in 11 regions of Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. The project’s goal is to increased use of, demand for and access to quality integrated RMNCAH and immunization services, particularly by youth and women. To enable the project, execute its mandate, the project has incorporated implementation research and program learning with the aim of using study findings to inform project interventions and improve maternal health services with aim of reducing maternal deaths in project supported regions.
Despite significant progress made in enhancing maternal and perinatal health in Tanzania, maternal mortality remains a significant issue in Dar es Salaam. This study aims to address the persistent high rates of maternal mortality, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage.
This study is a secondary data analysis of maternal deaths review reports (case notes and all clinical service records) based on records of 136 documented maternal deaths which occurred in Dar es Salaam for the period of Dec 2022 to May 2023 at different levels (Health Facility, Council and Region). The files will be collected in one place and the trained medical personnel will extract deceased individual level data from case files into Kobo Toolbox.
The study will provide relevant information and recommendation for the USAID Afya Yangu Mama na Mtoto project to enable address factors that are directly contributing to maternal deaths hence ensuring that the program interventions give a direct impact on improving maternal death rates in Dar es Salaam.
The purpose of the activity
The purpose of this activity is to engage a local consultant to support to USAID Afya Yangu Mama na Mtoto Project with local IRB application processes, data analysis and study technical report writing and dissemination using appropriate for as will be identified by both parties NIMR and Jhpiego.
The study objective.
The proposed secondary data analysis study is aimed at assessing contributing factors to institutional maternal deaths in Dar es Salaam region taking onto consideration the context specific of Dar es Salaam region health delivery system and challenges.
