Jhpiego is looking for a dynamic leader eager to build on Jhpiego’s global engagement and partnership across its portfolio of programming in 35 countries to drive accelerated progress towards ensuring women and girls realize their reproductive health goals.  The Family Planning (FP) Director will provide overall vision, leadership and direction to FP efforts across the organization, represent Jhpiego globally, champion FP as a public health and development investment priority, develop and maintain relationships to grow Jhpiego’s FP portfolio and seek opportunities to innovate and advance the field.  The FP Director will ensure technical excellence across the portfolio, supervise and manage technical staff in the family planning unit, execute activities, and oversee progress of unit priorities.  The ideal candidate is pragmatic, family planning savvy, and skilled at developing and taking strategy into action with stakeholders inside and external to the organization.



  • Drive the development of the vision and strategic plan and oversee development and management of workplans, budgets and special initiatives for family planning
  • Lead the conceptualization and development of new strategies and innovations
  • Ensure family planning strategies and programming is integrated and aligned with broader efforts and technical priorities across the organization to maximize public health impact
  • Provide leadership for new business development, including developing and maintaining strong professional relationships with external stakeholders to maximize Jhpiego’s impact, analyzing and developing new business opportunities, strategic positioning, partnership, and proposal design.
  • Ensure technical excellence and quality across the FP portfolio, define measures of success for Jhpiego’s family planning programming
  • Provide leadership for capacity building, coaching and mentoring, for local partner organizations and Jhpiego staff.
  • Oversee HR management of the family planning unit and support efforts to build capacity for family planning across the organization
  • Provide guidance and support to Jhpiego’s family planning advisors worldwide, deploy and maximize human resources across the unit, assign work functions, identify and acquire new talent and supervise staff
  • Keep abreast of and ensure latest technical guidance on family planning is widely disseminated and used
  • Champion knowledge management principles within and outside the organization, ensuring program learning and best/promising practices are shared with staff globally and disseminated widely through diverse channels
  • Create opportunities for sharing and discussion to ensure technical support is informed by the latest evidence
  • Ensure global leadership for Jhpiego in family planning by serving on external advisory or working groups and representing Jhpiego in key global and regional technical meetings and committees as needed
  • Present state of the art practices in family planning to donors, partners and other key stakeholders and drive the development of technical guidance and publications
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to identify synergies, opportunities to address gaps, ensure coordinated strategy development and to provide technical support to country programs
  • Identify strategic external communication priorities to build, maintain and expand Jhpiego’s reputation in family planning and oversee timely implementation and effective execution of identified priorities


Required Qualifications


  • Clinical degree or advanced degree in public health, health administration, public administration, or related degree
  • 10+ years' progressively responsible international public health management experience, including family planning
  • Proven leadership skills and expertise in program planning, implementation and management; ability to lead multiple and competing demands and establish priorities
  • Strong technical and programmatic background in family planning, particularly issues related to health systems, alternative service delivery models (e.g. private sector, direct to consumer, digital strategies)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and oversee implementation of data driven strategies
  • Excellent understanding of donor environment, priorities and processes. Proven track record of generating leads and leading new program development activities
  • Proven experience in leading and supervising highly skilled and qualified technical personnel with diverse cultural and professional backgrounds
  • Proven experience establishing strong collaborative relationships across technical areas and with external partners
  • Strong change management, results oriented and decision-making skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and oral presentation skills; experience communicating with a broad and diverse set of stakeholders
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, and enthusiasm in a fast-paced and complex internal and external environment
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 30% time
  • Fluency in French preferred
  • Experience living in a developing country context preferred
