Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (CNMO), needed to play a pivotal and collaborative role in providing clinical strategic guidance to the headquarters LT, TLI, GPO, GHR, GECO, NPD and Country Offices.  This includes guiding Directors and technical advisors on how and when to take evidence to action, ensuring that decisions are being made using current and reliable sources.  CNMO will actively brokers and nurtures institutional relationships within the Johns Hopkins University as well as nationally, regionally and globally.  CNMO will also position Jhpiego as a credible leader within the University, with donors, global public health agencies and professional associations, including but not limited to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNAIDS, ACOG FIGO, The G4Alience and COSECSA.  The CNMO role is funded at 30-50% level of effort and will report to the Vice President, Technical Leadership and Innovations (TLI).





  • Provides clinically and health workforce focused strategic guidance to Jhpiego TLI teams
  • Ensure that TLI units build, support and nurture the capacity of Jhpiego clinicians to ensure technical integrity of Jhpiego’s programs, including maintenance of clinical credentials and continued clinical practice
  • Guides technical working group promoting safety by monitoring and responding to serious adverse events
  • Engages in clinical practice either in the USA or Jhpiego field country
  • Supports Core Initiative 9, ensuring that nurses and midwives are fully empowered members of inter-professional teams within Jhpiego
  • Serves as mentor to clinicians enrolled in the Jhpiego Leadership Development Program
  • Represent Jhpiego at major global health and related events and technical and program committees to contribute to shaping global health and donor agenda and to accelerating the implementation of key global policies and implementation of documented best global health practices among other ways through strengthening global dialogue with donors and others
  • Guides a process of identifying, updating and sharing mission-relevant clinical nursing & midwifery knowledge and monitors to ensure that technical teams are implementing using relevant, effective, evidence-based guidelines and recommendations
  • Guides an interdisciplinary technical working group responsible for ensuring safety of our interventions through monitoring and managing Serious Adverse Events within the Jhpiego portfolio




Required Qualifications

  • BA in nursing required; additional qualifications as a midwife preferred
  • Licensed to practice in home country
  • Highly respected and in demand as a global health leader
  • 15 years' progressively responsible experience in international health especially in clinical, technical, program, innovation, and research leadership
  • PhD, DrPH or Clinical Doctorate and advanced Practice Nursing credential preferred
  • Capacity to assess strength of evidence
  • Proven track record of success in shaping global policy and global health agendas
  • Proven track record in clinical leadership
  • Proven track record in harnessing innovation and policy change through creative methods
  • Demonstrated recent continuing medical education
  • Documented recent clinical practicepreferred
  • Demonstrated capability in leadership positions
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across the organization, with external partners and sponsors in a complex performing organization, make timely and effective strategic decisions and obtaining effective buy-in from colleagues and staff
  • French, Portuguese or Spanish language skills preferred
