  • Overview

     

    USAID’s flagship Maternal and Child Survival program (MCSP) is a global, USAID Cooperative Agreement to introduce and support high-impact health interventions with a focus on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths within a generation. The Program is focused on ensuring that all women, newborns and children most in need have equitable access to quality health care services to save lives.

     

    The Technical Writer Consultant will assist MCSP Communications Team Leader and larger MCSP global project teams to strategically communicate and document the achievements of USAID’s flagship MCSP. The technical writer will work collaboratively with key technical and publications staff to update our communications products, including technical reports and briefs, case studies, technical handouts/info sheets, and website language.

     

    Location:   Remotely; presence in MCSP DC Office sometimes required

     

    Period of Performance (subject to change): September 2018- August 2019

     

    Estimated number of days: 100 days

    Responsibilities

    • Work with technical and field staff to summarize and synthesize information and lessons learned across countries and technical areas
    • Write a wide range of materials, conveying technical information in a clear and accessible manner to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences. Examples of products include quarterly and annual reports, technical reports and briefs, research briefs, and case studies
    • Edit reports, technical documents, administrative documents, and other materials for appropriate grammar, consistent language/voice, consistent arguments/reasoning, etc.
    • Ensure effective planning of timelines to meet deadlines for publications, documents, and other materials
    • Ensure that field products reflect global messaging, key principles, and conceptual frameworks

     

    Possible Deliverables

    • Draft and/or final technical products and communications collateral

     

     

     

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in writing, health sciences or related field required
    • 8 years as a writer on public health, international development, or public policy topics
    • 3 years technical / scientific writing experience; 5 years exp. preferred
    • Demonstrated superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills
    • Strong research skills with willingness and ability to synthesize complex information in accessible and actionable formats
    • Articulate, professional, and able to communicate in a clear, positive manner with program staff
    • Knowledge of style manuals, such as Chicago, US Government Publishing Office, and Associated Press
      • Knowledge of the United States Agency for International Development’s and other international donor agencies’ guidelines
    • Knowledge of international health issues including maternal, newborn, and child health and family planning issues
    • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage several major activities simultaneously and work in a complex fast-paced and high-profile environment with short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
    • Ability to work with diverse groups of people; network with public health and publications professionals
    • Strong project management experience
    • Proficiency in MS Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel
    • French language proficiency a plus
