  • Overview

    The Senior Nutrition Advisor will provide technical leadership and project oversight in the area nutrition to an upcoming USAID-funded project in Guatemala. The Senior Nutrition Advisor will provide technical assistance at the national, facility and community levels. This integrated project aims to strengthen national government policies, their implementation at the local level, and health systems to expand access to improved nutrition and health services and encourage normative changes at the community level to increase uptake of healthy behaviors. The project will operate over a five-year period.


    The position will operate under the leadership of the Chief of Party and Jhpiego’s senior management team, and will oversee and ensure the technical and methodological soundness of all project activities. In collaboration with project team and partners, the position will support the design and implementation of service delivery strategies based on scientific evidence.


    This position is contingent upon award from USAID. Guatemalan nationals are strongly encouraged to apply.

    • Provide technical oversight, strategic direction and definition of appropriate nutrition activities in line with globally accepted best practices
    • Contribute to establishing and implementing a system to ensure technical quality of nutrition activities
    • Develop and/or update evidence-based training materials, standards, job aids, and curricula, supervisory systems needed for implementation of the project to meet the needs of USAID and the Government of Guatemala
    • Provide mentoring and capacity building at the individual and organizational level in nutrition including but not limited to:
      • Oversee program design, implementation, quality assurance, linkages, and monitoring of both the community-based and facility-based nutrition components in the work plan
      • Evaluate program progress of the nutrition component against deliverables on a quarterly basis
      • Coordinate with the other members of the technical team and NGO partners to develop and implement feasible facility and community-based approaches
      • Ensure nutrition activities are coordinated and integrated with project maternal newborn health and family planning interventions
      • Design and provide oversight on young child health/young child nutrition interventions
    • Coordinate nutrition advocacy, demand generation, and policy support, across project sites as required
    • Contribute to the formulation of innovative approaches for scale up of targeted nutrition services
    • Actively participate in relevant technical advisory/working groups and professional forums representing Jhpiego
    • Work with health care providers, local authorities, community members and project team members to identify facility and community-based service delivery issues that impede access to care and uptake of nutrition services
    • Identify training needs for clinical and community healthcare providers and assist in the design and implementation of measures to address those needs
    • Work with M&E staff to design, implement a plan to track data/results related to nutrition to inform adjustments in project implementation
    • Document successes, lessons learned and challenges in nutrition implementation as well as reports of project activities and results to the project and donor, including routine quarterly and annual reports and other reporting requirements as requested
    • Document and maintain an inventory of successful tools and approaches for nutrition
    • Author/co-author abstracts, presentations, and articles for journals and conferences
    • Supervise nutrition staff, as needed
    • Maintain excellent relationships with USAID and in-country stakeholders and develop rapid responses

    Required Qualifications

    • Master’s degree, 10 to 15 years of progressively responsible and directly relevant experience; Doctorate-level degrees preferred.  Nutritionist with nutrition B.S. or M.S. or a nurse or doctor with special courses on at least three nutrition topics (e.g., nutrition rehabilitation of children severe or moderate malnutrition, breastfeeding, infant feeding including complementary feeding, micronutrient supplementation, anemia)
    • At least 5-7 years working as a nutritionist (at the national or provincial level) or in positions where nutrition interventions were frequently implemented;
    • Advanced knowledge and skills of the most up-to-date scientific evidence on effective interventions in nutrition;
    • Experience in the development and implementation of strategic nutrition technical approaches in collaboration with other stakeholders who may represent a wide range of interests and needs
    • Demonstrated experience providing capacity building assistance at individual and organizational levels
    • Skilled in at least two or more of the following technical areas: strengthening service delivery projects; training; pre-service education; performance and quality improvement; monitoring and evaluation; MCH; FP; nutrition
    • Demonstrated experience with a mix of practical technical skills in nutrition, necessary for strengthening service delivery at the regional, national, clinical and community-level
    • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of Guatemalan healthcare system, particularly the public health system, experience living and working in Guatemala preferred
    • Familiarity with USAID’s administrative, management and reporting procedures and systems
    • Proven track record managing a project team composed of several technical experts and fostering team work
    • Excellent diplomacy skills and a proven ability to establish and maintain interpersonal and professional relationships with USAID’s host-country counterparts and representatives from other key stakeholders such as NGOs, CSOs, and the private sector
    • Expertise in research to practice—identifying and adapting best practices to specific project contexts
    • Excellent verbal, written interpersonal and presentation skills in Spanish required, fluency in English is preferred
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
    • Ability to travel nationally to project sites, approximately 35% of the time
