  • Overview

    Communications Specialist will assist the Communications Team Leader and larger communications team in the execution of the communications plan and strategy to promote USAID’s flagship Maternal and Child Survival Program (MCSP). This includes seeking opportunities to highlight MCSP leadership, country programs, initiatives, products and results through social media, featured articles, collateral, and other online mediums to include high-visibility domestic and international events, meetings, and conferences. This position has a strong emphasis on publications and dissemination, digital and social media, and graphic design.


    MCSP is a global, USAID Cooperative Agreement to introduce and support high-impact health interventions with a focus on 25 high-priority countries with the ultimate goal of preventing child and maternal deaths within a generation. The Program is focused on ensuring that all women, newborns, and children most in need have equitable access to quality health care services to save lives.



    Publications Management & Dissemination


    • Serve as the Communications Team’s primary liaison with the Jhpiego Publications Department, ensuring MCSP’s collateral is well-designed, properly edited, translated, and formatted 
    • Work directly with technical teams to move products along the Publications lifecycle from start to finish of a deliverable
    • Work with the Strategic Communications and Engagement Manager and other team members to effectively and strategically plan and execute dissemination campaigns
    • Track and post MCSP collateral to USAID’s Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC)
    • Support the improvement of and adherence to processes for publications tracking and management
    • Help ensure MCSP brand identity; answer branding inquiries; enforce adherence to USAID branding and marking plan and graphic standards
    • Manage print supply inventory and re-order communications collateral as needed
    • Manage posting of publications to the external MCSP website using WordPressSocial Media / Media
    • Daily management of MCSP social and digital media channels on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr
    • Assist in writing and scheduling creative, timely, digital and social media content; share pre-prepared social media toolkits and content
    • Strategically share content and engage with MCSP’s key audiences via social media to increase engagement and reach
    • Support the Strategic Communications and Engagement Manager in crafting and executing social media campaigns for digital advocacy days, events, and other programmatic and promotional activities
    • Work with Strategic Communications and Engagement Manager to increase social and digital media ROI; track engagement, reach, and other metrics using SproutSocial; and prepare quarterly and annual reports for management
    • Strategically live-tweet, stream, and post from events, conferences, and meetings to provide coverage of MCSP’s programmatic, advocacy, and outreach efforts
    • Monitor social media for development listservs; actively stay up-to-date and increase knowledge of latest platforms, practices, and standards in digital and social media
    • Assist with traditional media needs such as drafting press releases, media advisories, pitching, etc.


    Graphic Design, Photo, & Video

    • Assist Strategic Communications and Engagement Manager in conceptualizing and designing digital and print collateral to include minor revisions and major design initiatives such as: logos, social media graphics and banners, infographics, icons, tradeshow materials, posters, etc.
    • Actively use Adobe Creative Cloud products such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to enhance the visual appeal of MCSP’s work
    • Manage the MCSP Flickr page, including uploading and organizing photos, revising captions, and ensuring accurate photo credits
    • Create, edit, and format PowerPoint presentations for the MCSP Director and other high-level stakeholders as needed
    • Manage MCSP’s Overview Presentation and Prezi
    • Assist with video production and editing using Adobe Premiere, Windows Live Movie Maker, and/or Adobe Spark


    •  Assist with project-wide global dissemination and close-out, including end-of-project report, execution of documentation and dissemination plans, etc.
    • Manage editorial calendar, and cross-cutting content and production calendar, and keep it up-to-date with global health holidays and digital events
    • Work with Administrative Coordinator to manage and recruit team interns
    • Assist Communications Specialist to provide on-site management and coordination of events, including: logistics support, flow-of-show management, setting up promotional materials and displays, coordinating booth staffing, ensuring attendee check-in, staffing high-level speakers, day-of social media support as needed, etc.
    • Manage MCSP internal shared space on SharePoint on behalf of the team to include documents, presentations, collateral, “How-To” guides, etc.
    • Assist Administrative Coordinator with internal processes and reporting for the Communications Team, such as monthly leadership reports and quarterly team reporting
    • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining professional networks, and sharing learning with larger team
    • Provide surge support as needed, assisting with a variety of other communications tasks as requested by Communications Team Lead


    Required Qualifications

    • BA with 3+ years of professional experience in communications, digital and social media, or marketing
    • Ability to multi-task
    • Strong written oral and presentation skills
    • Familiarity with and interest in international health
    • Familiarity with federal government and related agencies
    • Knowledge and experience using: Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft products, the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop)
    • Knowledge and experience using Flickr, Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe Premiere, SproutSocial, WordPress, and other social, digital, media, and design platforms strongly preferred
    • Ability to independently edit and format videos for external consumption strongly preferred
    • Ability to meet deadlines under pressure, build consensus and work with diverse groups of people
    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 20%, if needed
    • Strong written and oral communications skills
