Based on an expert working knowledge of JHU and Jhpiego human resource policies, practices, processes and procedures, provides professional human resources services and expert advice in career and staff development, benefits administration, work/life balance and initiatives, visa preparation, employee relations and consultation, employment law, separation process, reward and recognition and performance management for domestic and international staff. The HR Generalist must have an understanding of the diverse composition and culture of the organization and have a strong foundation of experience in various human resources functions.


  • In joint collaboration with the Deputy Chief HR & Administrative Officer, manages the administration of human resource policies and procedures
  • Develops, recommends and implement policies and procedures and performance standards to complement various HR processes
  • Maintains compliance with policies and procedures and federal and state regulations with regard to all human resource practices.
  • Provides guidance on the interpretation of policies and benefits to all staff
  • Responds to management and employee questions on HR matters
  • Provides counseling and coaching to management and staff on employee relation issues ensuring effective resolution; conducts investigations as needed to resolve issues; assists staff with job-related or career/work life issues, payroll and benefit inquiries
  • Occasionally partners with the Chief HR & Administrative Officer or her Deputy in the design and development of annual staff development initiatives
  • Conducts and coordinates onsite staff development training initiatives
  • Manages the annual performance management process
  • Develops statistical data when required 
  • Manages the visa procurement process and works in joint collaboration with the JHU Office of International Services and external immigration attorneys to complete permanent residency petitions and applications for non US citizens
  • Manages and coordinates family medical leave, short and long term disability and workers’ compensation
  • Review claims and complete, distribute and verify documentation
  • Collaborates with divisional HR at Homewood, Benefits Operations and Occupational Health Services to resolve issues related to medical leave, benefit payments, salary overpayments, family medical leave approvals and documentation
  • Networks with University professionals; Human Resources, Benefits, Visa Office, HR Shared Services to resolve human resource issues
  • Approve internal service requests and other SAP transactions as required


Required Qualifications

  • BS or BA degree in Human Resources or related field
  • 7+ years human resources generalist experience
  • Knowledge of all applicable employment laws; including FLSA, FMLA
  • Knowledge of benefits administration and immigration regulations
  • Solid interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of training design and delivery; prior training experience
  • Understanding of internal performance consulting processes and procedures


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Human Resources, related field or MBA
  • Proficient French, Spanish or Portuguese language skills
  • Global travel or work experience
  • Experience in international development sector
  • HR certification
