Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Manager - Digital Media will work collaboratively within the Global Engagement and Communications (GECO) Department to promote Jhpiego to external audiences with a focus on positioning the organization, its programs, innovations and successful interventions as technical leaders in maternal and newborn health. The Communications Manager-Digital Media will build the profile of the organization nationally by developing a robust digital media strategy and presence across all platforms, web/video/social media, and manage the department’s digital assets. The manager also will oversee and lead its social media staff and presence, and help build an individual donor base through online campaigns and other robust communication activities.


The Communications Manager will work with members of the GECO team to manage the Jhpiego’s Global Communicators network and build capacity of staff in communicating Jhpiego’s successes in improving the health of women and their families. This will include offering technical assistance in storytelling, writing, social media, video production, speaking and presentation skills. The Communications Manager will work along with Global Program Office and Technical Leadership Office to insure that Jhpiego staff are familiar with organizational communications policy, meeting and exceeding the organization’s approved communication standards and participating in communications efforts to promote existing programs and new business opportunities.


  • Cultivate a compelling digital media presence across all platforms to present the Jhpiego brand with one voice in a variety of formats and help drive engagement, build an individual donor community and drive online donations.
  • Work in collaboration with the GECO team to develop new policies and procedures to carry out and meet the organization’s strategic communications goals;
  • Develop the organization’s social media plan and oversee its execution;
  • Provide consultation and communications assistance to individual global communicators as assigned to further best practices and integrate communications across the organization including but not limited to communications planning, writing, photography, social media, media outreach and events
  • Manage special projects as assigned by the Director of Communications
  • Find new and innovative avenues to communicate the Jhpiego message
  • Create marketing and fundraising materials for the development team
  • Develop and pitch national and international media on Jhpiego successes and secure high-level placements 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
  • Six to ten years related writing, communication and management experience required
  • Prior experience supervising medium-sized work teams
  • Strong creative, non-technical writing skills
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and assessment skills
  • Project management skills
  • Ability to develop communications plans to synchronize with organizational goals in fundraising and development, government and corporate relations
  • Understanding of digital communications channels, including electronic and print media
  • Proven record in building digital medial platforms, notably social media communications
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with donors and prospective donors, corporate leaders and partners
  • Ability to build consensus and work with diverse groups of people
  • Ability to represent Jhpiego effectively to external audiences including corporate and foundation executives, business and government organizations and other cooperating agencies
  • Ability to meet deadlines under extreme pressure
  • Experience and ability to travel to developing countries


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
  • Six years related experience in the health or international development field preferred
  • Experience supervising or managing large communications projects
