Overview

The Sr. Editor will oversee editorial services, review and finalize projects ensuring that the products produced by the Global Engagement and Communications (GECO) Department adhere to the quality standards of the department and are edited in an accessible, readable manner.   Sr. Editor works collaboratively with department staff to manage complex editorial projects with multiple documents and/or stages.  Sr. Editor will also supervise a team of editors and spend approximately 40% of their time in project management.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

 

  • Work with Publications staff to develop editorial best practices for the editorial team; responsible for implementing the approved best practices
  • In conjunction with Publications staff develop toolkits and/or job aids for authors throughout Jhpiego to enable successful creation of reports
  • Act as point person for editorial style/grammar questions with other editors and ensure consistency across editors
  • Maintain and add to Jhpiego editorial style guide outlining best practices and incorporating new trends, including Jhpiego cultural and technical terminology
  • Seek out and recommended editorial resources/software to improve the quality and efficiency of our work
  • Work closely with the Communications staff to constantly improve the publication process across departments and with internal clients
  • Evaluate incoming projects for editorial need against budget allocation
  • Strategically assign projects to editors based on their strengths and/or needs for cross-training
  • Communicate with editorial freelancers/casuals to answer questions
  • With the Communications staff, develop project request forms and project templates, as needed
  • Negotiate and clarify editorial timeline and responsibilities with the client
  • Build an inspired team of editors striving to ensure quality communications for Jhpiego
  • Work with Publications staff to build project partnerships between editors and designers to create successful, collaborative publications
  • Edit and/or write materials on a variety of public health topics, ensuring technical accuracy, editorial consistency, clarity and appropriateness for the intended audience including reports, journal articles, technical briefs, training materials, Web site information and other communications pieces
  • Collaborate with graphics teams for high quality publications 

 

 

Required Qualifications

  • BA in English, writing, editorial, communications, or related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • 7 years’ experience in the communications or publications field required; 10 years' experience preferred
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Expert knowledge of grammar, usage and editorial style and guidelines including Chicago Manual of Style and AP Style
  • Knowledge of USAID and other international donor agencies’ guidelines
  • Well-developed knowledge of global health work and priority technical areas, specifically family planning, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and maternal health issues, programs and terminology
  • Exceptional presentation skills and oral and written communication skills are required
  • Demonstrated experience in client management and team-based management
  • Demonstrated project management and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to handle budgets and produce within these set parameters
  • Excellent skills in facilitation, team building and coordination
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage several major activities simultaneously and work in a complex environment with short deadlines and intense pressure to perform
  • Strong editing and writing skills and ability to transition smoothly between a wide variety of projects from those for technically sophisticated audiences to compelling stories for the general public
  • Ability to meet deadlines under extreme pressure
  • Ability to build consensus and work with diverse groups of people
  • Proficiency in MS Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in international health field
  • Proficient French, Portuguese, or Spanish language skills
  • Working knowledge of online platforms, such as WordPress and SEO concepts
